Obituary for Christine Lynne Gasser
Christine Lynne Gasser, 70, died peacefully in her home in Arvada, Colorado on Thursday, October 12th, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Chris was born March 12, 1947 in Ottawa, Illinois, the only child of LaVerne and Marjorie Clairmont Gasser. She was a 1965 graduate of Ottawa High School where she was very active in the Girls Athletic Association. A 1969 graduate of Northern Illinois University in PE, she represented the University on the women's golf team. Upon graduation Chris moved to Denver and began her career as a physical education teacher. She taught most of her career at Beach Court Elementary School. During her teaching years, Chris was an active Girl Scout serving as troop leader and trainer for many years.
Chris participated in league sports for as long as she was able, enjoying golf, softball, and soccer. With her Girl Scouts she enjoyed camping, hiking, canoeing, sailing, and climbing. Always competitive, she became passionate about bridge as she scaled back her physical activities and achieved the Life Master level. A talented artist as well, Chris enjoyed many different crafts, did beautiful cross stitch, and for many years created “custom made” birthday and anniversary cards for her friends.
After her retirement from teaching, Chris devoted many hours to being a docent at the Denver Zoo. She especially enjoyed the lorikeets and loved teaching young people about the birds as well as the “secrets” of the zoo animals.
Chris was also very involved in her church, St. John Chrysostom Episcopal where she organized the Christmas Food Boxes, served on the altar guild, and helped lead Women in the Spirit group retreats.
Not one to let her hands or her mind be idle, Chris became a member of Curves, traveled as long as she was able including a highlight trip to Africa, helped trap and relocate beaver, recycled like a crazy woman, challenged her friends to “friendly” games of Bananagrams, Rummikub, Boggle, or anything else available. These were always friendly because she always won. And she continued to give advice from the sidelines to her Broncos and Rockies.
Chris was preceded in death by her parents, her surrogate Deloteus, Sterrett, and Grimm parents, her furry companions O.J., Gypsy, Daisy, Rusty and Zeke. She is survived by cousins, a huge family of friends and her beloved kitties, Charlotte and Gracie.Memorial Services will be held Saturday, November 4 at 1:00 at St. John Chrysostom Church, 13151 W. 28th Avenue, Golden, CO 80401.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. John Chrysostom Christmas Food Boxes or to the Denver Zoological Foundation, 2300 Steele St., Denver, CO 80205.?
