Obituary for Carol Elaine Stuska (Hazlewood)

Carol Elaine Stuska (Hazlewood)
Dec. 25, 1927 --- Jan. 21, 2018

Carol Elaine Stuska (Hazlewood) entered this world Christmas Day 1927. She was born in the family home just south of Walsenburg Colorado. Being the youngest of 8 children, 6 surviving, she was watched over by her parents and older siblings. It was a hard life with no running water, very dry conditions making gardening extremely challenging, little food, cooking and staying warm by a large coal stove. When her father, Robert died, Carol was approximately 10 years old. She moved in with her eldest sister and brother-in-law in Rawlins Wyoming. Carol continued to reside with her sister for a couple years after which time she returned to Walsenburg and her mother's home. By this time Carol was of working age and doing some babysitting and waitressing for a short time at the Alpine Rose Cafe in Walsenburg (still open in Walsenburg). Shortly after, Carol and her mother moved to Denver where Carol acquired a job at the "beanery" packaging dried beans for retail. Next she worked at an envelope manufacturing business. In time, she met her one and only husband, friend, partner, Stephen Stuska. After marring, they had five girls with the last three surviving. Carol excelled as a caring, sensitive mother and wife in Arvada, Colorado. When Stephen passed in 2007, they celebrated a marriage of 58 years.

Though she had a sensitivity to sunlight, Carol would wait until dusk going out to tend her flower beds that circled the home. She spent hours each day tending to our home and family. When we were sick, she rubbed Vicks Vapor Rub on us, made us chicken noodle soup and poured us ginger ale. Carol loved her hair brushed, her back rubbed and enjoyed a long hot soak in the bath tub. She truly enjoyed getting together with family for holidays and birthdays. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with Vince and their dog in their little trailer.
Carol spent her last few years at a skilled care facility where she recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She left us quietly during the early morning hours of Sunday January 21, 2018 to be with her loved ones preceding her in death.
Carol will be sorely missed and remembered affectionately by family and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, February 3rd, 10 a.m. at
Aspen Mortuaries, 6370 Union Street, Arvada, Colorado.
