Obituary of Joseph Flageolle

Joseph William Flageolle, son of Alvie Flageolle and Cecilia Balanga Flageolle, was born July 29, 1936, in Stratton, Colorado. He departed this life on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, surrounded by his family, in his Commerce City home of 65 years, at the age of eighty-six years, ten months and twenty-two days.

Joe was raised in Stratton, Colorado and attended Catholic school through the 8th grade and then worked with his father and brothers in construction. In 1958, Joe moved to Commerce City with his parents and younger siblings where he purchased a home that they all lived in together. He met Anita in November 1966, through a blind-date, and they married on January 14, 1967, at Our Lady Mother of the Church and raised their family in Commerce City. Joe moved into self-employment as Flag Construction and later expanded with his cousin Gerald Flageolle, into Capitol Fence, and the two built fences all over the state, employing their sons during the summer months.

Joe was a long-time member of Our Lady Mother of the Church (OLMC) in Commerce City. He served OLMC for many years as a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Charter member and in 1989 served as Grand Knight; participated in the restoration of the OLMC nave after fire damaged it in 1974, helped build the Knights of Columbus Hall, was a Eucharistic Minister and counted the weekly offertory. Joe retired from construction in 1995, when he and Gerald sold their business.

He continued to stay very active working on his own home as well as the homes of friends and family on rebuilds and improvement projects. He and Anita visited family in Stratton, Missouri, and Texas over the years. He was happy to fill in as a babysitter for the grandkids and always enjoyed attending poker parties and playing pool with family. He built elaborate designs of organization and storage in his garage over the years and spent many mornings solving the world’s problems over donuts and coffee with his buddies at the local donut shop.

Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin, neighbor, and friend and will be greatly missed and always remembered for his warm smile and love of hard work and helping others.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gilbert Flageolle, and Ralph Flageolle; sister Olive Flageolle; and grandson TJ Flageolle. Joe is survived by his loving wife of over fifty-six years, Anita Clark Flageolle; his children, William (Bill) Flageolle and his wife Jane Cleveland, Tracy Schoenebeck and her husband Michael, Theodore (Ted) Flageolle and his wife Carol; his grandchildren, Claire Flageolle-Cleveland and her husband John Domenico, Mikah Flageolle-Cleveland, Ellery Flageolle-Cleveland, Camille Schoenebeck, Abigayle Schoenebeck, Greyson Schoenebeck, Emilee Flageolle, Joey Flageolle, and Noah Flageolle; and his great grandchild, Annabelle Flageolle; siblings, Mary Ridgeway, Margie Gray, Lillian Garcia and her husband Joe, Theresa Ryan, Esther Cain; sister-in-law, Jacquie Flageolle; and a number of nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, relatives and friends.
