William “Bill” Nelson passed away at the age of 91 on November 15, 2023. He is survived by daughters, Barbara Wampler (Mike) and Nancy Prymak (William) along with three sisters; Louise Grotheer (Morris), Marjorie Nelson (Robert) and Betty Albrecht (Harold) and three cherished grandchildren, Jonathan Wampler, Kylie Prymak and Ryan Prymak. Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy Smith Nelson and parents, Carl and Alma Nelson.
Bill was a native of Kansas growing up on a farm near Salina and was of proud of his Swedish heritage. A graduate of Kansas State University in May of 1954 with a degree in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Bill enjoyed involvement on the Livestock Judging team and served as President of Farmhouse Fraternity. Moving to Denver to serve a two-year commitment to the Air Force as an officer, Bill met Denver Public School teacher, Dorothy “Dottie” Smith. After a two-year courtship they married in December of 1956.
Bill began his career with Great Western Sugar Company in 1957 working initially as an Agricultural Field specialist in Lovell, Wyoming. The next 28 years at Great Western involved roles of increasing responsibility in Mitchell, Alliance and Scottsbluff, NE with transfer to Denver corporate headquarters in 1971. Bill concluded his career in 1983 as Vice President of Sales for GW and their sugar cane subsidiary, Godchaux Henderson based in New Orleans. Bill transitioned into a second career at Dean Witter/Morgan Stanley Financial Services working as a stockbroker for another 17 years retiring at age 70.
The final chapter in Bill’s life was marked by his favorite job ever, grandfather. Known as “Pa” to his three grandchildren, Jonathan William Wampler (age 27), Kylie Grace Prymak (age 26) and Ryan William Prymak (age 23), Bill devoted much of his time and energy to these grandchildren and friends along with numerous volunteer activities at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church and Kiwanis International. Bill lost the love of his life in December of 2012 when wife Dottie passed away. He found meaning through volunteer work and developed dozens of friends in his final home at Morningstar of Arvada. The impact Bill Nelson had on his family, friends, work associates and those that knew him was tremendous. 91 years well lived leaves a wonderful legacy of this special man.
Services will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church at 11500 W. 20th Avenue Lakewood, CO 80215 on Saturday, December 16th at 1:00 pm.
