Obituary of Charles Gilbert Bowles

Charles Gilbert Bowles (Gil), age 96, of Arvada, Colorado, has died.  He died at home on November 4, 2023. He was cared for at home by family.

He was born on July 3, 1927, in Mt Vernon, New York to Charles Alvin and Helen Gilbert Bowles. He had an older brother, Curtis, who died in 1983.  His family, spent summers in the cabin in Cragsmoor, New York and the school year in Mt. Vernon. They also spent time on the Jersey shore with family.  This was the source of many of Gil's best stories. He joined the Navy in WW II.  After the war, he earned a degree in Geology at Wesleyan University while enjoying playing football on the school team.  Another source of great stories!

He began his career with the US Geological Survey in Carlsbad, New Mexico where he met his future wife, Leora Mann (called Lea.) They were married in 1952.

Their first two daughters, Sarah and Carol, were born in Carlsbad.  Martha and Paul were born in Arvada, Colorado. Gil and Lea were strong, active members of the Arvada Presbyterian Church for many years.  They were supportive of many groups and gave generously of their time and talents.  The Bowles family enjoyed camping, ice skating, skiing, swimming together at the local pool, and using the Folboat to sail, paddle and run mountain streams. With retirement approaching Gil began learning to windsurf. They travelled to several countries during this time, enjoying seeing the world. They visited their children and grandchildren in different states as often as they could.  Lea died in 2015.

When increasing years slowed him down he enjoyed playing sudoku, reading the paper, watching the Broncos and visiting with family. He was able to remain in his home in the loving care of Nathan and Belinda (grandson and wife) and Paul and Beth (son and wife) in spite of his dementia diagnosis.

Gil was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, and grandson Casey.

He is survived by his children Sarah (David) Leeds, E Carol Bowles, Martha (Andrew) Bowles Edwards, and Paul (Beth) Bowles. Gil and Lea left ten grandchildren-Ali, Chelsea, Nathan, Jayna, Kiandra, Hannah, Helen, Alan, David, and Angela.  There are six great grandchildren-Diesel, Maggie, Mikau, Riley, Kohen and Jovie.

A Celebration of Gil’s Life will be Sunday, January 21st, 2024, at Nathan and Belinda's home (Gil's home for many decades.)  It will be an open house from 1:00 to 4:00.  There will be food and drinks served.  Nathan and Belinda have prepared a special video tribute.  The address is 6123 Urban Ct.  Arvada, CO.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation, P.O. Box 5585, Denver, CO 80217-5585. Freedom Service Dog, 7193 S. Dillon Court, Englewood, CO 80112 or the Denver Rescue Mission, 3501 E. 46th Avenue, Denver, CO  80216.
